Daintree Forest Buy Back Programme

This year, Rentokil have donated funds to Rainforest Rescue to buy back land in the Daintree in Far North Queensland, which will be protected from development forever. It will help provide a wildlife corridor for the endangered Cassowary. Without the corridor, Cassowaries will not be able to go in search of food or a mate. They, and many other animals, need the protection of the forest to move around.

About Rainforest Rescue

The Daintree rainforests are critical habitat for the endangered Cassowary pictured here.Although surrounded by the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, the Coastal Lowland Tropical Rainforest from the Daintree River to Cape Tribulation remain unprotected and endangered. These rainforests are of international conservation importance as one of the most significant regional ecosystems in the world.

The Daintree rainforests are critical habitat for the endangered Cassowary. They are also vital habitat for the primitive Musky Rat-kangaroo, the rare Bennett's Tree Kangaroo, endangered Spotted-tailed Quoll and a myriad of smaller creatures little known to science

Rainforest Rescue is a not for profit organisation committed to saving our rainforests for current and future generations.
Rainforest Rescue creates opportunities for individuals, families, organisations and businesses to become involved in successful projects that protect and restore our dwindling rainforests.

Projects involve rainforest restoration, research aimed at improving rainforest restoration and conservation, and the purchase and ongoing management of high conservation value rainforests.

Did you know that cassowaries...
  • are Australia's largest land-based animal and largest bird
  • can weigh up to 90kg (red kangaroos weigh in at just 60kg);
  • are an endangered species
  • have reversed gender roles - males incubate the eggs and raise the chicks
  • are seriously threatened by habitat clearing and fragmentation, cars, dogs and hand feeding
  • depend on the Daintree for their survival.
